Red & White Appeals to Silks Hotels

Red & White Appeals to Silks Hotels

One in 25 of the population will develop leukaemia, myeloma or lymphoma in their lifetime.

Silks Hotels Romsey proudly supports the ‘Red & White Appeal’ a Southampton Hospital Charity, to create the transplant treatment centre of choice for patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders from Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.

The appeal is named ‘Red & White’ in recognition of the particular importance of red and white blood cells for haematology patients.

The whole project will cost just over £7 million. £5 million has already been secured from the Department of Health. However, a major fundraising drive has been launched to raise a further £2.2 million to complete the project and Silks Hotels Romsey are very pleased to announce that the ‘Red & White Appeal’ is their chosen charity for 2009/2010.

Patients needing a transplant have very low immune systems so have to be cared for within isolated rooms for many months.

The entire project involves two stages:

  • Stage One: Build an extension to the hospital in order to house new rooms for haematology inpatients.
  • Stage Two: Create a specially designed, dedicated haematology day case unit adjacent to the haematology inpatient facility.

The new purpose-built haematology Day Case Unit will
  • improve quality of care for patients
  • improve patients' privacy and dignity
  • create a calming and comfortable environment for both patients and their families
  • enable more people to receive care close to their homes; provide continuity of care by co-locating inpatient and day care services
  • improve facilities for patients' relatives who donate cells for their loved ones' transplants
